THE COURSE
 
The Denim industry is in constant evolution, strongly innovative it occupies an increasingly broader segment of the fashion market. Denim Institute Milan is dedicated to train the new generations of professionals, we provide them with the skills they need for future career paths and offer unique
insights into the Denim world.
Our educational team is made up of Denim experts, consultants, researchers, fashion designers, collectors who have a proven experience in the fashion world. Thanks to our partnerships with companies, the students have the opportunity to live a real experience in the Denim manufacturing industry.
At the end of this course the participants will have gained a strong understanding of Denim history, learned how Denim fabrics are made, various treatments and how to construct the iconic five pocket trousers.
 
PROGRAM
 
FROM WORKWEAR TO MASTERPIECE
Over time, the Denim industry has developed a
production chain in which tradition and innovation are
constantly complementing each other; continuous
research in this sector requires constant updating and
knowledge of the historical roots of the product.
The Denim Institute offers students an intensive
theoretical and practical journey through the history of
Denim production, from the iconic five pockets to
present day.

1 _ FROM WORKWEAR TO FASHION
Type of class: lecture
Duration: 6 hours
This first introductory lesson will accompany students
through the history of denim, from its origins to its mass
spread in the 1960s. It will give you a first image of the
social and cultural conditions that have transformed the
“waist overall” – the resistant and indestructible work suit
– into a must-have piece of any wardrobe, celebrating
the blue jeans as the democratic clothing par
excellence.
Students will have access to the UNION FADE historical
archive- a selection of vintage garments that shows the
evolution of denim through fabrics and details.

2 _ MARKETING, BRANDING & TRENDS
Type of class: lecture
Duration: 6 hours
Since the 1960s, cinema, fashion and sub-cultures have
spread the use of Denim geographically allowing it to
take place within the collections of the most important
brands. Denim has become part of mass culture to this
extension that changes in style and marketing are closely
linked to the cultural changes of society itself.
We will study the diffusion and trends of Denim on the
market, focusing on brands through the evolution of
their marketing and communication strategies. including
Fiorucci, Calvin Klein, Armani, Roy Rogers, Rifle, Diesel,
Replay, Mustang, Lee Cooper etc.

3 _ FROM COTTON TO DENIM FABRIC
Type of class: site visit- educational workshop
Duration: 10 hours
During this workshop the students will have the
oppor tunity to spend a whole day at the
manufacturing site of a Denim company, following a
path that will show the company’s production cycle,
from the spinning of the cotton fibers to the weaving
of the final fabric.

4_ CHEMICALS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Type of class: lecture
Duration: 8 hours
After visiting the production cycle, we will examine in
depth how chemicals are used during fabric processing
such as textile sizing, dyeing, finishing and treatments.
Thanks to the possibility to access the UNION FADE
archive, students will be able to view a series of vintage
and historical garments, a source of continuous
inspiration for large companies.
From an environmental point of view, the Denim
industry has the highest impact on the ecosystem, both
for the substances used and for the considerable
consumption of water.
We will discuss these issues and focus on innovative
solutions.

5_ TECHNOLOGY AND FADING
Type of class: site visit
Duration: 10 hours
Students will visit one of the most important Italian
companies in terms of research, innovation and
production of technological equipment for Denim
processing. In the company they will have the
opportunity to view the machines, learn about the
processes and outcomes of different treatments.

6 e 7_ FROM FABRIC TO FINISHED GARMENT
Type of class: educational workshop
Duration: 8 hours + 8 hours
The two laboratory days will be dedicated to the
construction of a blue jeans, starting from the pattern to
the to assembling finished garment.
